Court defers case to Aug 27
CORRUPTION | MACC’s plan to charge former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob under the MACC Act at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court this morning may have to be postponed to a later date, according to a source close to the case.
This came after the Bera MP was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur last night.
Malaysiakini learned that Ismail Sabri’s lawyers and the prosecution team had just been informed by his doctor that Ismail is not fit to appear before a judge today.
“The doctor just informed the lawyers that he (Ismail Sabri) is not in a condition to face charges today.
“His lawyer is expected to inform the court about this soon,” said the source.
Ismail, who is the country’s ninth prime minister, was scheduled to appear before Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court judge Suzana Hussin this morning to face a charge under the MACC related to the declaration of assets.
According to media reports, Suzana later ordered the case to be deferred to Aug 27 after the court was informed of Ismail’s health issues.
Previous health scare
This was not Ismail’s first bout of being taken to the hospital.
In February last year, Ismail was taken to the hospital after he collapsed at his house in Damansara, which his family suspected was caused by high blood pressure.
It was reported that MACC investigated Ismail last year under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
It was understood that the probe was related to the expenditure and procurement for promotional activities under the Keluarga Malaysia initiative during his tenure as prime minister from August 2021 to November 2022.
