MACC scandal: Pressure mounts for proper probe

Pressure is mounting for the government to carry out a proper probe into the MACC.

The Malaysian Bar is calling for a “credible probe”, while Suhakam has backed calls for a Royal Commission of Inquiry to be established.

The human rights watchdog also supported calls for investigations to be led by former chief justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat.

The government thus far has not responded to allegations that MACC officers colluded with private individuals to shakedown business rivals.

A probe led by Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar is instead focusing only on MACC chief Azam Baki’s shareholdings scandal.

Crying foul over unbiased enforcement

Conservative Muslim groups who have been beating war drums over unauthorised temples, are now crying foul over enforcement action taken against them.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) removed a booth for Islamic preaching in Bukit Bintang for violating regulations on obstructing pedestrian walkways.

Multiracial Reverted Muslims' (MRM) founder Firdaus Wong said they had been carrying out such activities for 14 years without issue, and had been told by DBKL before that permits were not required.

Bersatu imploding

Bersatu divisions are falling apart as members disenfranchised with party president Muhyiddin Yassin's resignation from their leadership posts. This comes a week after deputy president Hamzah Zainudin was axed.

In Johor, 11 divisions declared themselves dissolved - a position that has been disputed by Bersatu secretary general Azmin Ali - who is a Muhyiddin loyalist.

Over in Malacca, Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyati Shamsudin also quit her post as the constituency’s division chief.

Meanwhile, a Perikatan Nasional leadership meeting this Sunday is expected to turn into a major pow-wow, discussing both the role of opposition leader currently held by Hamzah, as well as that of the next PN chief.
