New customs initiative to streamline KLIA Terminal 1 passenger flow

Effective tomorrow, a new coordinated customs inspection initiative will streamline passenger flow at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 departure gates without compromising security.
Customs Department director-general Anis Rizana Zainuddin assured that security at national entry points remains at the highest level, supported by integrated coordination among all responsible agencies.
"This initiative will ease passenger movement in the terminal while maintaining high security standards, as Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd has upgraded its scanners to meet both Aviation Security and Customs Order requirements," she told Bernama.
Yesterday, it was reported that, starting Jan 1, the Customs Department will consolidate outgoing passenger checks at KLIA Terminal 1's departure gates.
At present, these screenings occur in the departure zone after immigration clearance, often leading to congestion during peak travel times.
The Transport Ministry said this change will allow passengers to proceed more smoothly to their gates, reducing waiting times in the departure area.
The ministry confirmed that security levels and customs enforcement will not be affected. Instead, passenger and baggage screenings will be strengthened through better operational coordination and adherence to agreed procedures.
