Azmin, Peja among leaders quitting PN posts

Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali has announced his resignation as Perikatan Nasional secretary-general effective Jan 1, 2026.

His announcement follows Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation earlier today, even as tensions between PAS and Bersatu appear to be easing.

“I take note that my appointment falls under the authority of the PN chairperson.

“Therefore, I have decided to resign as PN secretary-general effective Jan 1,” said the former Gombak MP.

The Selangor opposition leader also said he would relinquish his position as the state PN chief effective the same date.

Azmin (above) expressed appreciation to all parties for their cooperation and support during his tenure.

“The cooperation of all parties is greatly appreciated, and I would like to extend my thanks,” he added.

This afternoon, Taman Medan assemblyperson Dr Afif Bahardin noted that Azmin had appointed him as Selangor PN secretary, and so similarly announced his resignation from the post.

”I take note that my appointment was under the purview of the Selangor PN chief, Azmin.

”Therefore, I have tendered my resignation as Selangor PN secretary effective Jan 1, 2026,” said Afif.

‘Sec-gen should leave too’

Responding to Muhyiddin’s resignation, PAS treasurer Iskandar Abdul Samad earlier took a swipe at Azmin to also call for his resignation.

“If the chairperson goes, the secretary-general should go too, as the secretary-general is chosen by the chairperson,” said Iskandar, a former Selangor PAS commissioner.

Meanwhile, Bersatu vice-president Ahmad Faizal Azumu also announced his resignation as Perak PN chairperson, effective the new year, citing a similar reason, that his appointment was a prerogative of Muhyiddin as chairperson.

”I would like to record my highest appreciation to all the leadership and PN component members in Perak for the cooperation, support and trust given to me all this while,” said the former Perak menteri besar.

Separately, former Johor menteri besar Dr Sahruddin Jamal, a Muhyiddin loyalist, announced his resignation as Johor PN chief.

In a Facebook post, Sahruddin also alluded to past incidents of how Bersatu had lost the prime minister’s post, as well as the menteri besar posts in Johor and Perak.

However, in both instances, it was Umno that had moved to take over from Bersatu, not PAS.

The post-election changes due to political dealings, however, saw Bersatu being replaced by leaders from Umno, at the time, in a Muafakat Nasional pact with PAS.

Following Selangor, Perak, and Johor, Negeri Sembilan PN chief Hanifah Abu Baker also resigned from his position, citing similar reasons.

The Labu assemblyperson and state opposition leader also said his decision was made in respect of PN’s organisational structure.
