Umno Youth will be holding a special convention to determine whether its future lies within the Madani government.

Its chief, Dr Akmal Saleh, said the gathering will be held at 3pm on Jan 3 at Dewan Tun Ismail, World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, two weeks ahead of the 2025 Umno general assembly, which was postponed from this year to avoid clashing with the Sabah election.

In a video on Facebook, Akmal said the move to hold the special convention is a response to DAP’s Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin’s failure to deliver a public apology within the 24 hours given to her.

“I ask all those who are brave, who want to voice out their hopes, the contents of their hearts, from people who love Umno, Malay people who love Umno’s struggle, to come in large numbers.

“Let us express our hearts’ wishes so that what will be said at this convention will be brought to the supreme council and submitted to the Umno president (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi),” the Merlimau assemblyperson said.

On Dec 22, the Kuala Lumpur High Court ruled that the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s royal decree granting former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak house arrest was invalid.

Yeo remarked that this was a cause for celebration, drawing sharp rebukes from not only Umno, but also leaders from PKR and DAP.

The following day, Selangor Umno Youth handed over a memorandum to one of Yeo’s officers at her service centre, demanding that she issue an apology and take down her post within 24 hours.

Puchong Umno Youth chief Khairul Azmil Bashir Mohamed said failure to do so would see his wing cut off ties with its Puchong DAP counterpart.

Yesterday, Puchong Umno followed through on its threat and terminated the division’s cooperation with Puchong Harapan.

The suggestion of leaving the government, which sees cooperation between former rivals BN and Harapan, was also raised by Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

Asyraf, who also fiercely criticised Yeo for her statement, had said it may be time for the BN party to reassess its ties with allies.
