DAP MP's 'celebration' of Najib ruling sparks PKR backlash

DAP publicity chief Yeo Bee Yin’s remark that former premier Najib Abdul Razak’s home arrest bid hitting a legal brick wall was a cause for celebration has drawn sharp backlash from certain quarters in PKR.
PKR’s Lembah Jaya assemblyperson Syed Ahmad Syed Abdul Rahman, better known as Altimet, described it as “uncouth and uncalled for”.
Selangor PKR election director Dr Sathia Prakash Nadarajan also said such remarks only deepen divisions.
“Court decisions should not be politicised or used as a reason for some parties to celebrate. Publicly rejoicing over court rulings, especially by DAP, only deepens divisions and highlights a negative image of political maturity.
“Any actions driven by personal political impulses will erode the spirit of shared responsibility within the government,” he added.
Sathia reminded politicians that the country now requires stability, unity, and public confidence in its institutions.
PKR’s Subang MP Wong Chen had also welcomed the court’s decision, posting on Facebook yesterday that “justice lives”.
Yesterday, Umno leaders condemned Yeo for stating on Facebook that the court decision was another reason to celebrate the year-end.
Her remark also prompted Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki to suggest that the party review its position in the coalition government.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi posted a brief one-line warning - “not to pour fuel into an already raging fire” - without mentioning names.
MCA: Yeo ‘rude’, ‘vindictive’
MCA also weighed in, with secretary-general Chong Sin Woon saying Yeo’s remark is an example of the insensitivity and insolence of some DAP leaders.
“I would like to remind Yeo and other DAP leaders that, despite political differences or personal dislike for someone, one should never celebrate another person’s difficult moments.
“There is no need to rejoice or party over the tears of others. Yeo’s rude actions reflect a vindictive character, and worse, she appears to be inciting others to act similarly by openly posting on social media,” he added.
Yesterday, the Kuala Lumpur High Court, much to the disappointment of certain Umno leaders, ruled that the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s royal decree granting Najib house arrest was invalid.
“I’m of the view that a house arrest order is not capable of execution, no legal provision for such a mechanism in Malaysia,” judge Alice Loke said.
