The microchipping programme and Feeders Mapping System are among the initiatives being planned to address the issue of stray animals in Perak.
State executive councillor for housing and local government Sandrea Ng Shy Ching said microchipping would enable more effective enforcement against irresponsible pet owners and reduce animal abandonment.
“In addition, the amendment to the Dog Licencing By-Laws is underway, which aims to improve the current by-laws and review the licencing mechanisms to encourage pet owners to neuter their dogs, including a more structured and graduated fee structure,” she said.
She was speaking during the oral question-and-answer session at the state legislative assembly sitting in Ipoh yesterday.
The Teja assemblyperson was responding to a question from Hashim Bujang (PN-Bukit Chandan), who asked about the subsidised spaying programme for dogs and cats, as well as any new policies to address the issue of stray animals.
Meanwhile, Ng said the Feeders Mapping System is a community-based mapping initiative to coordinate individuals who feed stray animals.
She said through this network, feeders could act as the government’s eyes and ears, helping to respond to complaints more quickly and providing more accurate population data.
“This transforms them from working alone to becoming part of a comprehensive solution,” she added.
Regarding the subsidised spaying campaign, the Perak Pawsitive Initiative, she said that as of Aug 17, 504 dogs and 376 cats had been neutered.
“Additionally, 567 dog licences have been issued by local authorities, indicating a rise in responsible pet ownership,” she said.
