DAP has called on the Attorney-General to explain why it took him more than three months to institute proceedings against former Kedah Mentri Besar Sanusi Junid for allegedly causing hurt to two men.

DAP chairman Lim Kit Siang said in a statement today the delay in pressing charges in "such a simple and straightforward case" does not reflect well on the competence and professionalism of the AG's chambers or the police.

The delay raised questions if it was "another example of political interference with the constitutional duties of the Attorney-General," he added.

Lim said all prosecutorial duties should be exercised with "complete independence, impartiality and integrity, uncorrupted by any extraneous or partisan political consideration".

Sanusi was to be charged at the Sepang magistrate's court yesterday for allegedly causing hurt to Shaiful Abdul Rahman and Mohd Nazri Ishak at aerobridge door A2 at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on May 5 at about 12.40am but the case was adjourned as Sanusi was certified medically "not fit" to attend the hearing.

His lawyer submitted a medical certificate declaring that Sanusi was not fit to attend the trial from Aug 18-25 as he was suffering from an ear condition called "vertigo with tinnitus".

The case is now fixed for hearing on Oct 3 ([#1]Sanusi's case of alleged assault postponed on illness ground[/#] (Aug 22).
