Budget 2026: Fund public healthcare, scrap sugar subsidies - MMA

      Dania Kamal AryfPublished: Oct 5, 2025 5:38 PM | Updated: Oct 5, 2025 6:44 PM

Budget 2026 should commit to raising public healthcare spending by abolishing sugar subsidies and expanding taxes on sugary drinks, suggested the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA).

In a statement today, the group suggested that the revenues obtained from the move should instead be redistributed to the Health Ministry to increase public healthcare spending from 2.4 percent to at least five percent of the nation’s GDP.

It can also discourage unhealthy eating habits, save public healthcare costs, it adds.
