Chegubard nabbed for sedition over alleged speech on royalty
Bersatu division chief Badrul Hisham Shaharin was arrested by police last night for sedition and defamation, allegedly over his speech during a political ceramah in Bagan Serai, Perak.
This is according to his legal counsel Rafique Rashid Ali in a brief press statement this morning.

Bersatu division chief Badrul Hisham Shaharin was arrested by police last night for sedition and defamation, allegedly over his speech during a political ceramah in Bagan Serai, Perak.
This is according to his legal counsel Rafique Rashid Ali in a brief press statement this morning.
"At 10pm yesterday, a team of police officers from D7 (gambling/vice/secret societies division) arrested Bersatu division chief and activist Chegubard (Badrul).
"The arrest was made for investigation under the Sedition Act, Section 500 of the Penal Code, for defamation, and the Communications and Multimedia Act.
"A remand hearing is expected to be held at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters at 10am today," the lawyer said.
In an update at 1.20pm, Rafique said police investigating officers applied for a four-day remand order against Badrul.
However, the application was turned down by a magistrate. Badrul has since been released from police custody.
Based on a TikTok link shared by Rafique, his client is being investigated over a speech during a ceramah in Bagan Serai on Aug 29 titled “Ceramah Perdana: Selamatkan Malaysia”.
In the video excerpt, Badrul was heard speaking about the Malay rulers and an alleged attempt by certain quarters to make the Malays lose respect for the royalty.
Under probe
In a statement, the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department confirmed that police are investigating the politician over his speech.
Its director M Kumar said the investigation was commenced after police found a video clip posted on a TikTok account showing Badrul making allegedly seditious and baseless remarks against the royal institution.
"The probe regarding this viral video is being carried out by Bukit Aman CID's Classified Crimes Investigation Unit," he said.
Kumar said the investigation was opened under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act, which stipulates offences regarding seditious actions, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which deals with statements that could cause public fear or alarm, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (misuse of network services).
