Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz has been accepted as a PKR member, the party’s secretary-general Fuziah Salleh confirmed.
She told Malaysiakini when contacted that the party approved his membership application during a central leadership committee meeting on July 26.
Earlier, Sinchew Daily quoted Zafrul telling reporters that he is now a PKR member.
He reportedly told reporters after visiting the Malaysia booth at the Osaka World Expo today he had applied for membership with the party’s Ampang division.
However, the report noted that he did not disclose whether he was holding any party position.
Zafrul is a senator first appointed in March 2020, and again in December 2022.
His term expires in December this year with no possibility of reappointment, meaning he would have to relinquish his cabinet position.
He tendered his resignation from Umno and announced his intention to join PKR on May 30.
The announcement had triggered speculation of an impending cabinet reshuffle, as it meant Umno would have one fewer representative in the cabinet.
The move also drew backlash from Umno leaders who criticised Zafrul and warned PKR that such “poaching” could strain relations between the two parties.
