Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations on Monday reaffirmed that Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Anadolu Ajansi reported.

“Iran is the principal source of regional instability and terror,” the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US said in a joint statement following their summit in Canada.

“We have been consistently clear that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” the statement read.

The G7 leaders reiterated their commitment to regional peace and stability, affirming Israel’s right to self-defence and expressing support for its security.

They also underscored the need to protect civilians and called for broader de-escalation efforts.

“We urge that the resolution of the Iranian crisis leads to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza,” the leaders said.

They added that the group would remain “vigilant” regarding potential implications for global energy markets and stood ready to coordinate efforts to ensure market stability.

Tensions have escalated sharply since Friday, when Israel launched coordinated airstrikes and drone attacks on multiple sites across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting retaliatory strikes from Tehran.
