Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says the expansion of SST on imported fruit is all about taxing rich people who eat food like avocados and cod.
However, Anwar did not address that the 5 percent tax will apply to all imported fruit, including apples and oranges, which lower-income groups tend to buy.
He also appeared to gloss over the fact that many "local" fruits are on the list of imported goods to be taxed due to insufficient local supply.
Meanwhile, the premier brushed aside calls to reintroduce GST, saying it would unfairly impact the poor.

Rafizi clocking out
Rafizi Ramli's time at the Economy Ministry is coming to a close.
Monday is his last day on leave, and Tuesday will be his last day in office.
He had already cleared out his office last week and paid tribute to staffers who left promising careers to help realise his vision.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, meanwhile, appeared to hold out for hope that Rafizi would reconsider and stay on as minister.

Another assault linked to Pahang royalty
Police are investigating a member of the Pahang royal family who allegedly stabbed a man in a Kuantan nightclub last month.
The victim claimed in a police report that prior to the stabbing, he was also coerced into giving RM1,200 to the royal as an apology for bumping into him several times.
Last year, a member of the Pahang royal family, Tengku Eddie Akasya Tengku Abd Rahman, and four other individuals were charged with attacking a road construction worker with a knife.
