National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang wished all Buddhists in the country a Happy Wesak Day.

He said that Wesak Day embodies universal values such as love, compassion, and self-awareness, which align with the aspirations of national unity.

"Diversity is Malaysia's strength. However, this strength can only be maintained if we understand one another, respect differences, and accept diversity as part of the national identity.

"These values (namely) understanding, respect, and acceptance should not only be spoken but should be embodied in our actions and policies," he said in a Facebook post.

He added that these values must begin at home, be reinforced in schools, translated within the community, and upheld by every citizen.

Wesak Day is the most important holy day for Buddhists to commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and death of Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism.

King extends greetings

Meanwhile, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar and Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, the King and Queen of Malaysia, also extended Wesak Day greetings to all Buddhists in the country.

Their Majesties emphasised that strong interracial ties not only form the foundation of the nation’s strength but also serve as a catalyst for unity.

“In our multiracial society, harmony is achieved when we show mutual respect and understanding toward one another.

“Together, let us build a more peaceful, united, prosperous future. Happy Wesak Day to all Buddhists in the country,” Their Majesties said in a Facebook post.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also said Wesak Day is a significant reminder of the importance of upholding the universal values of compassion, harmony and peace.

Anwar said that, in Malaysia, the festival encourages the promotion of human dignity and sincere respect among people amid diversity.

“Therefore, I urge all of us to embrace this spirit for a united and harmonious nation while preserving our inclusive traditions and culture,” he said.
