Prudential Assurance Malaysia Bhd has reaffirmed its commitment to Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) interim measures despite recent reports that it is increasing health insurance premiums.

In a statement today, Prudential said it reached out to policyholders in stages since March 18, 2025, with updated notifications detailing the measures, updated premiums, and insurance charges.

It said the measures include staggering premium adjustments and additional assistance for eligible policyholders.

There were recent media reports that Prudential Malaysia will be increasing premiums for its medical insurance by varying degrees, citing a 19.6 percent increase in insurance claims.

According to the Prudential statement, “the articles referenced excerpts from a letter to our customers which outlined the average medical inflation rate for one of our medical plans, PRUHealth, resulting from an increase in the number of policyholders who made a claim and their average claims amount.

“This was shared to help policyholders understand the factors influencing healthcare costs and ensure adherence to guidelines,” the statement said.

Prudential reiterated that medical cost inflation is a nationwide issue affecting all walks of life, and the BNM interim measures are a joint commitment from the insurance and takaful industry to implement these adjustments responsibly and transparently.

“Our top priority is to ensure that our customers receive the support and clarity they need and that they understand the options that are available to them with regards to their policy coverage,” it added.
