Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated that under the proposed Urban Renewal Act (URA), the original owners affected will get to live in the redeveloped property.
He said that, unlike now where compensation is based on current property value, the affected owners will get compensation based on future value.
In a message relayed by his senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, Anwar said that compensation also includes rental for transit accommodation during the redevelopment, an ex gratia payment for renovations to the existing property and other payments.
"So the perception that the URA will cause Malays and bumiputera to lose their place in cities, or that this law prioritises developers, is not true.
"Instead, the URA is being formulated to protect the rights of owners and ensure a fairer and higher compensation than now, to protect the rights and elevate the people, especially urban Malays,” Nashrul said during a briefing by the Prime Minister's Office today.
This is also to ensure the urban poor, especially Malays, live in dignity instead of being left to live in squalor for decades without a solution, he added.
On Feb 19, Kubang Kerian MP Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man alleged the proposed law would displace poor Malays and Indians from urban areas.
The PAS deputy president also pointed out that the existing legislation is sufficient.
Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad also shared similar views, saying it will disproportionately displace Malays and erode the community's political power.

Incessant slander
Anwar slammed certain quarters who seemed to be committed to slandering the government during the fasting month, using outdated stories and tactics.
These actions, he said, showed how desperate certain quarters are in trying to manipulate public perception with their lame ideas.
“Slandering people, especially during Ramadan, is abhorred by Islam and those committing them have low character.
“We will monitor the situation to ensure it doesn’t affect our spirit in ensuring the wellbeing of the people and nation,” Anwar added.
