This follows the arrest of a Malaysiakini journalist who was accused of receiving bribes in exchange for not publishing articles against an agent that deals with migrant workers.
MACC today confirmed it is investigating a migrant trafficking cartel recently exposed by Malaysiakini journalist B Nantha Kumar, who was arrested over alleged bribery on Friday.
“Yes, we are investigating them.
“I have mentioned this many times to the media that we (MACC) are not only investigating, but we have been doing investigations on issues related to cartels that deal with trafficking foreign labourers into this country,” MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki told a press conference in Putrajaya this afternoon.
Azam was asked for an update on MACC’s investigation against the journalist and if the graftbusters were also investigating the agent over their alleged involvement in cartel activities.
Nantha is being accused of receiving RM20,000 from an agent dealing with foreign workers, in exchange for not publishing two articles that would expose the cartel.
The journalist has worked with Malaysiakini since 2018 and has written extensively about immigration syndicates, including those involving the Immigration Department.
Recently, he broke a story about a new Pakistani cartel allegedly being masterminded by a former Immigration Department officer, who is now a “Datuk”.
