Germany’s centre-right CDU/CSU bloc has won national elections by a large margin, with all constituencies counted.

Merz’s (above) conservative alliance - made up of his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Bavaria-only Christian Social Union (CSU) - had a large lead over the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which surged to become the second-largest party after it nearly doubled its support since the 2021 election.
The centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) of outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz suffered a long-expected defeat, tumbling to third place.
The populist Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) and the pro-business Free Democratic Party (FDP) failed to achieve the five percent threshold usually required to enter the Bundestag, Germany’s lower house of Parliament.
