Ekhwan was awarded the DBNS, which carries the title of “Datuk”, on Jan 14, 2019.
On Feb 4, Malaysiakini reported that police had received two reports from the former UKM vice-chancellor regarding allegations of defamation and slander made against him.
Higher Education Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir also confirmed receiving a resignation letter from Ekhwan.
Zambry stated that his ministry accepted the resignation as Ekhwan cited the need to focus on other matters.
Previously, social media was abuzz with allegations of abuse of power and misappropriation at UKM, linking Ekhwan to the claims.
