I fully agree with Kassim Abu's views on the issue of Suqui's appeals ([#1]What's the fuss about Suqui's requests?[/#] Dec 21).

May I also add a few observations?

First and foremost, isn't ours a democratic society? All citizens can express their views on any issue. Some people may not agree with Suqiu's appeals and they express their differing views. It's all right. It is their right to disagree.

But these same people must have the courtesy to allow people such as Suqiu to express their views. Defeated US presidential candidate Al Gore in his speech said that he strongly disagreed with the US Supreme Court's decision, but he accepted it. This is what it should be in a democracy - that I may disagree or even detest what you say, but I will defend your right to say it.

But why should the Federation of Peninsular Malay Students (GPMS) have the right to threaten anyone such as giving Suqiu the one-month ultimatum to retract its appeals?

It is for the citizens of this country to voice their views/requests, and it is for the government of the day to decide whether it is implemented or not. If the requests are ignored, the voters will know what to do the next time around.
