“Ethnic diversity does not mean we must be hostile, misunderstand, or fight one another. In fact, diversity allows us to learn about each other’s differences.
“If we can unite amidst these differences, we can certainly build a strong sense of solidarity in this nation,” PAS Youth added in its Chinese New Year greetings.
Yesterday, PAS urged all parties to uphold mutual respect, emphasising that it is a cornerstone of the Malaysian way of life and a key to preventing controversies between communities.
In the party’s Chinese New Year message, its secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan stated that recent disputes involving Islam could have been avoided if all parties were mindful of each other's sensitivities.
He highlighted that neglecting such issues often leads to "equally damaging responses" from those affected.
"Taking matters lightly, acting arbitrarily, or disregarding the legitimate interests and perspectives of others run counter to the Malaysian identity of mutual respect and cannot be justified," he added.
Although he did not refer to a specific controversy, Takiyuddin appeared to allude to Muslim dietary requirements, possibly referencing the recent "ham" sandwich incident.
In wishing Malaysians a happy Chinese New Year, the PAS leader called on all parties to reaffirm their commitment to the Malaysian spirit of unity and mutual respect.
