Mixue Malaysia Sdn Bhd has assured its customers of its halal status, emphasising its compliance with halal standards and apologised for an outlet's use of a type of garbage bag.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the beverage chain said the bags were labelled with wording that "could raise concerns".
"Although the bags are only used for waste disposal and are not involved in food preparation, we take this issue very seriously," it said, adding that they were bought from an online platform.
According to checks by Malaysiakini, details on the incident prompting Mixue's statement are unclear and the location of the outlet is unknown.
This comes after a recent controversy featuring "ham" and cheese sandwiches - which were labelled halal - sold at KK Mart outlets at Universiti Malaya, leading to an uproar including from Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh.
The sandwiches were produced by Shake and Bake Cafe Sdn Bhd, which used halal-certified chicken ham to make the sandwiches.
However, the company did not have the certification to put the halal logo on the sandwich packaging.
Cleaning measures
Mixue said it has taken proactive steps, such as requesting the execution of the Islamic cleaning process “sertu” at the affected outlet, to ensure it complies with halal standards.
The company also discontinued the use of the bags and is reviewing its procurement procedures to prevent recurrence.
"Mixue Malaysia would like to emphasise that all raw materials used in our products are from halal sources and possess valid halal certification.
"We remain committed to ensuring cleanliness, quality, and halal compliance at all of our outlets," it added.
