I refer to Lu Nai Lee's letter [#1]Throw in the towel, Suqiu[/#] (Dec 20). Suqiu's conduct through this whole episode has been, in my view, exemplary and should remain so.

I have yet to see any real evidence of Suqiu being unreasonable or even attempt to make the situation worse. Whatever response it has issued was to defend itself from unreasonable attacks and abuse by politicians including Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad himself. If Suqiu were to cave in now, it would set a precedent where we condone unscrupulous action and behaviour.

At this juncture, all Suqiu can do now is to defend its dignity and the list of appeals is just secondary. Its quick agreement to meet with the Federation of Peninsular Malay Students (GPMS) and Hishamuddin is a further example of its honest intention to resolve the matter. Sadly, the same cannot be said for GPMS and its supporters.

Suqiu's reasonable response against unreasonable behaviour is what is needed if we are to forged real consensus and understanding. Just collapsing and allowing threats and bullying to be the norm will only lay the foundation for worse behaviour from politicians.

Suqiu should not break at this juncture but to respond in the appropriate manner. The issue has extended beyond racial relations, and reveals the behaviour of our politicians. In the end, we as citizens are responsible for the kind of politicians we allow to lead us.
