According to Suhakam interim union president Elza Nadiah Shaik Sulaiman, the picket aims to protest three alleged issues:
An announcement that three deputy secretaries were being given salary increments.
Another announcement the same deputy secretaries have a different performance evaluation system compared to other Suhakam officials.
Suhakam purportedly denying workers participation in the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA).
“There really isn’t any transparency,” Elza told Malaysiakini, adding that workers had repeatedly asked for explanations.
She claimed that workers do not know how much the deputy secretaries have received as part of their increment from Grade 52 to Grade 54 or the new system - called the 360 system - that the three will be evaluated with.
“We asked, why did these three people get promoted? Then we asked, why are they using a different system?
“So I see this issue as a form of discrimination,” she said.
As for the last issue, she explained that the government had given its departments and agencies a limited amount of time for workers to sign documents for the SSPA.
But Suhakam had delayed this process despite questioning from workers, Elza further alleged.
She claimed that the workers have yet to receive answers to any of their questions.
‘I have no idea’
When questioned about the matter, Suhakam commissioner Ragunath Kesavan said he had not heard about it.
“I have no idea at all,” he told Malaysiakini.
Meanwhile, Elza said Suhakam has never had a union and its employees are looking to unionise after the picket on Friday. Elza is currently the interim president of the union.
The picket will be held from 8am to noon in front of Menara TH Perdana in Kuala Lumpur, where Suhakam headquarters is based.
