Bersatu Youth chief Hilman Idham has cautioned party members to beware of enemies who are scared of the strong leadership line-up.

The Gombak Setia assemblyperson told the Bersatu annual general assembly that claims of factional disputes, which arose after the party’s convention in July, are an example of attacks by scared enemies.

Hilman said these enemies were struck with fear when they saw pictures of Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin with his newly minted deputy president Hamzah Zainudin and secretary-general Azmin Ali.

“Delegates, I want to advise you that as party members, when enemies are upset, they are afraid, worried, we should not just be happy.

“We have to be vigilant, we also have to be careful, because when our enemies are afraid, upset, worried, they will implement various strategies to bring down and destabilise our strong leadership,” he told the audience during his closing speech.

‘Bersatu strong with this team’

He was speaking of the change in the party’s leadership that occurred recently, which saw Hamzah release his hold on the secretary-general position to make way for Azmin.

Last week, Muhyiddin told Malaysiakini of his success in arranging for the election of a “compromise team” to alleviate friction in the party.

It was speculated that the compromise was made to prevent a battle between factions aligned with Hamzah and Azmin.

Speaking on news reports of the party’s leadership shifts, Hilman said he had received many calls and messages about the matter, joking that he felt like a phone operator.

“They said, ‘Eh, Bersatu is strong, if this is its leadership’,” he said.

Those who contacted him were “old friends”, he said, adding that they included ministers and menteris besar.
