The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) has activated the Central Disaster Operations Control Centre to coordinate and monitor rescue operations and flood victim management on the ground.
Nadma in a statement today announced that the central control centre was activated to coordinate all state control centres managing the flood situation.
“Coordination includes assets and logistical requirements, arranging the movement of rescue teams as well as other requirements that cross their respective states,” it said.
It also said that the Special Malaysian Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (Smart) has also been mobilised to flood-hit areas to assist in search and rescue operations in the affected states, especially Kelantan.
Commenting on the current flood situation, Nadma stated that very heavy rain (dangerous) which will continue until tomorrow, as forecast by the Meteorological Department, could potentially cause greater flooding in Kelantan and Terengganu.
Nadma said that all assets have been mobilised to face a more serious disaster if it occurs.
Ministers can’t go on leave
Leave for all federal ministers has been frozen due to the flood situation in the country, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said.
All ministers and deputy ministers have been instructed to go to the flood-hit areas to provide necessary assistance.
“All ministers have been told to go to the ground now. Yes, leave has been frozen for them,” he told the media after performing Friday prayers in Putrajaya today.
Flooding has worsened in several states today, causing the number of victims to increase sharply. Kelantan recorded the highest number, with 59,232 people evacuated to 221 relief centres as of this morning. In Terengganu, 20,911 people from 5,916 families are taking shelter in 232 centres.
Other states also affected by the floods are Kedah, Perlis, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor.
MetMalaysia has also issued a continuous rain warning for Kelantan, Terengganu, Perak, Pahang, Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Johor, until tomorrow.
