Billionaire T Ananda Krishnan died earlier today at the age of 86.
The tycoon’s death was confirmed in a statement issued by Usaha Tegas Sdn Bhd, a company that he chaired.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the demise of our chairperson, Ananda Krishnan Tatparandam, who passed away peacefully on Nov 28," the company said.
Ranked among Malaysia's richest men, his business empire ranged from operating TGV Cinemas to Maxis Bhd, Astro Holdings, Bumi Armada, Measat Satellite Systems, and Tanjong Plc, along with the products they offered, which have become household names in Malaysia.
Besides this, a major landmark attributable to Ananda in Kuala Lumpur was his involvement in the development of the iconic Petronas Twin Towers and the surrounding Suria KLCC property development.
No less important was Measat, then known as Binariang Sdn Bhd, which launched its first two satellites in 1996, thereby propelling Malaysia into the space industry.
His philanthropic efforts include setting up the Yu Cai Foundation.
Born to a Sri Lankan Tamil civil servant, he studied at Vivekananda Tamil School in Brickfields and later at Victoria Institution, Kuala Lumpur.
He attended the University of Melbourne, Australia for his BA (Honours) degree majoring in political science as a Colombo Plan scholar.
