PKR Youth has urged all political youth organisations to come together to stop the rot in the judiciary.

The call was made following the exposure of a video clip which showed senior lawyer VK Lingam in a telephone conversation with purportedly the current Chief Justice, Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim.

The conversation surrounded fixing the appointments of 'friendly' senior judges.

In a statement read out by PKR Youth information chief Lau Tek Hai, PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin (photo) said a 'Youth in Solidarity to Restore the Judicial Body' movement should be formed.

"We wish to state the commitment of PKR Youth in calling for the government to cleanse the judicial system of the rot brought about by certain parties," he said.

Shamsul said PKR Youth will start the ball rolling by initiating an awareness campaign aimed at informing people of the abuses of the judicial system by those in government.

The wing will also seek to bring evidence of the abuses to national as well as international bodies such as Parliament and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) while pressing on the government not to be muted in the face of the latest scandal.

"Injustice here has clearly been proven, and the people will no longer be fooled," said Shamsul, who also called for Chief Justice Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim to step down.

ACA report filed

Lau read the statement before a 15-member PKR delegation filed a report with the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) office in Kuala Lumpur regarding the video clip.

Led by PKR vice-president R Sivarasa, the delegation met Federal Territories ACA director Abu Zubir Mahfodz and submitted a copy of the clip, an audio recording, as well the statement of PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim on the matter.

Yesterday, Anwar released the video clip, which was said to have been filmed in 2002, during a press conference.

Among the matters discussed during the telephone conversation were the potential appointment of Ahmad Fairuz as the chief judge of Malaya (CJM) and his promotion as chief justice, which eventually took place in 2003.

Also discussed was the apparent existence of two camps in the judiciary aligned to former chief justice Eusoff Chin and his successor Mohamad Dzaiddin Abdullah.

The inference from the discussion was that "key players" should be nominated for judicial appointments in order to hear cases and deliver judgments accordingly.

In addition to the video clip, Anwar also revealed a short audio recording in which his name was brought up by Lingam.

Meanwhile, Sivarasa told reporters outside the ACA office that the clip casts aspersions on the process of appointing judges.

This has serious implications on the handling of court cases, said the opposition politician, who is a lawyer by profession.

PKR also intends to file a police report on the matter and meet with the Conference of Rulers and the Sultan of Perak, Azlan Shah, who was formerly a Lord President himself.
