PARLIAMENT | The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry is in discussions with several ministries and agencies to develop Malaysia’s own Large Language Model (LLM) as support for the local artificial intelligence (AI) sector.
Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Mohammad Yusof Apdal said the process involves, among others, the Health Ministry, Digital Ministry, Higher Education Ministry, Plantation and Commodities Ministry, as well as the Prime Minister's Department.
“The development of LLM will adhere to the AI Governance and Ethics guideline that was launched on Sept 20 this year.
“The AIGE guideline is intended as a mechanism to engage responsible use of AI technologies in the country.
“Adherence to the guideline will ensure that the LLM being developed does not ignore local values and culture,” he said in response to Lee Chean Chung (Harapan-Petaling Jaya).
Yusof said the development of Malaysia’s own LLM would reduce reliance on external AI technologies in various sectors, used in processes such as decision-making, automation and research.
He also noted the high costs involved in the development process, which can be reduced by using services from cloud service providers.
“However, there are concerns about data security because the data will be stored abroad if using the cloud service providers, with a risk of a leak of confidential data.
“The ministry through Mimos Berhad is now exploring the use of computer infrastructures with a competitive cost, capable of safely handling proprietary data,” he said.
He added that the ministry is also looking at possibilities of developing a Malay-language LLM with cooperation from local businesses and universities.
