MACC gets report against whistleblower, five reps summoned

The MACC today said it had received a complaint regarding a businessperson who is suspected to be involved in a bribery scandal over a mineral mining project in Sabah.

This is believed to be in reference to the whistleblower who has been making a series of exposés against several Sabah assemblypersons to whom he admitted to giving bribes.

In a statement, the anti-graft agency said it had recorded the statement of five Sabah representatives to facilitate an investigation into the case.

“Initial investigation into the report has led to the discovery of information that implicates several Sabah legislative assembly members in alleged bribery involving the businessperson.

“MACC has summoned five assemblypersons to record their statement and investigation is actively ongoing,” the agency said.

MACC also reiterated its call for the public to not speculate on the case and give room for authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation.

The whistleblower, who has since admitted that he was the bribe giver, had expressed his readiness to share all the purported evidence in his possession with MACC but wanted the authority to accord him protection under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010.

The whistleblower has eight videos, which Malaysiakini had sighted, containing discussions between him and several state ministers and assemblypersons, including Deputy Chief Minister Shahelmey Yahya discussing returning a sum of money.
