IGP: Cops probing death threat on whistleblower

The police are investigating the death threat received by a whistleblower who claimed to have videos of politicians engaging in corrupt acts, said Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code and handled by the Classified Crime Investigation Unit (USJT).
“The suspect also sent two pictures (to the whistleblower) - one showing a pistol with bullets and the other of a man lying on the ground after being shot.
“The whistleblower feared for his safety and lodged a police report at a police station for further action,” Razarudin said today.
The police chief said that the whistleblower received the threat on Nov 11, at 11.02pm when he was at a restaurant.
The death threat
Earlier, the whistleblower told Malaysiakini that he received a WhatsApp call from an unidentified foreign number with the threat.
“During the 16-second phone call, a man threatened me in Chinese saying he was from a ‘hired killer group’ and had been instructed to kill me within 24 hours if I did not shut up. He said this was my final warning.
“The caller also sent me photographs of guns and bullets as well as a photo of a man shot lying on the road.
“I am very afraid. I fear for my safety and the safety of my family,” read the whistleblower’s police report, which Malaysiakini sighted.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim indicated that the whistleblower would not be guaranteed protection if he was the bribe giver.
He said the bribe giver should also be investigated.
“If there is vague information including whether the whistleblower is also involved in corruption, it must be reviewed and investigated, not give them protection immediately,” he was quoted as saying by Astro Awani.
