Like Anwar's many friends and acquaintances around the world, I am concerned by the reports of his deteriorating health. I have read the articles in malaysiakini and elsewhere, reporting that there is a possibility that he may suffer paralysis. Likewise, there are reports that his wife is having a difficult time getting to see him.

Everyone has a right to the best medical care possible. It is essential that Anwar be allowed to obtain the best medical advice and treatment he can, regardless of where it might be obtained. I believe that it is extremely important that the government of Malaysia should allow Anwar to seek treatment at any hospital, and from any doctors, of his own choosing. This is not an issue of politics, but of humanity and decency.

Regardless of his political feelings about Anwar, as a medical doctor Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad seems bound by a medical oath and a duty to 'do no harm'. As a doctor, surely he will not wish to stand by and allow Anwar to obtain less than the best possible medical treatment.

The prime minister also certainly remembers the damage that Malaysia's image (and he himself) suffered when the former Inspector-General of Police beat Anwar.. For this reason as well, Malaysia surely does not want to suffer another major blow to its international reputation and provoke further criticism. One black eye is enough.
