Cops probing source of loud blast in Ipoh
A loud explosion was heard in Ipoh city centre this morning, alarming many citizens and sparking a probe into its cause.
Perak police chief Azizi Mat Aris said the force is investigating the source of the unsettling sound heard around 11.05am and relevant authorities have denied that it is linked to mining activities in the area.

Several agencies have been consulted, but nothing significant has been revealed yet, he added.
“We’ve inquired with the General Operations Force in Ulu Kinta and confirmed they had no explosive-related activities at the time.
“The Perak Land and Mines Office also told us there were no rock blasting events at quarries before noon,” he said in a statement today.
The Meteorological Department reported no seismic events locally either, although there was an earthquake in Halmahera, Indonesia, at approximately 11.24am, he added.
The Perak Mineral and Geosciences Department director confirmed detecting the explosion but also said that tremors in Ipoh were not from quarrying activities, Bernama reported.
According to Berita Harian, social media users reported feeling tremors in various locations, including Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital, Chemor, Stadium Perak, Meru, Falim, Manjoi, and along the North-South Expressway near the Menora Tunnel.
Azizi urged anyone with information on the incident to contact the state police hotline at 05-245 1119 or 245 1073.
He also urged the public to remain calm and not to spread speculation as to the nature of the event.
