Thailand is striving to achieve Tier 1 status in human trafficking suppression with the launch of a National Identification and Referral Centre for Human Trafficking Victims.

Acting deputy commissioner-general of the Royal Thai Police, Prachuap Wongsuk, said the centre will implement the government’s plan to prevent and combat human trafficking.

He said the initiative aims to enhance Thailand’s credibility with other countries and international organisations.

“The government is determined to elevate Thailand’s status in human trafficking prevention from Tier 2 to Tier 1,” he said in a statement after the opening of the centre by Thai Deputy Prime Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga in Bangkok today.

Prachuap said the government has long prioritised the prevention and suppression of human trafficking, declaring it a national agenda.

He highlighted significant progress made on April 8, 2022, when the Coordinating and Supervision Committee for the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking approved the Action Plan on the National Referral Mechanism, Case Management, and Assistance for Victims of Human Trafficking and Forced Labour.

“This action plan adopts a victim-centric approach and aligns with the internationally recognised National Referral Mechanisms (NRM).

“Its goal is to enhance Thailand’s human trafficking prevention efforts in accordance with human rights principles and international standards,” he said.

Prachuap said the NRM is designed to facilitate cooperation among relevant agencies, enabling them to share information and refer victims to assistance services.

The mechanism includes a reflection period, allowing suspected victims of human trafficking to recuperate and contemplate their experiences in a supportive environment, facilitating meaningful discussions with officials.

In Bangkok and the central region, Prachuap said the Royal Thai Police, along with the Social Development and Human Security Minister, as well as the Labour Ministry, are responsible for location determination and management.
