Solve religious conflicts through harmony committee - unity minister
National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang has urged religious leaders to utilise three bureaus under the ministry's Harmony Committee to resolve issues related to interfaith harmony.
The ministry in a statement today cited functions of the Religious Issues Management and Mediation Bureau that focuses on mediation as a means of resolving interfaith conflicts at risk of threatening harmony.

The ministry in a statement today cited functions of the Religious Issues Management and Mediation Bureau that focuses on mediation as a means of resolving interfaith conflicts at risk of threatening harmony.
“This (bureau) is for reconciliation or resolving any disputes and disagreements among members of the community from various religions and races,” said the ministry.
Further, the ministry said Malaysians should embrace the concepts of understanding, respect, and acceptance to bridge differences in a multi-racial and multi-religious society.
“The ministry through the Department of National Unity and National Integration is always ready to provide community mediator services in managing the issues of unity and harmony of the people in this country,” he said.
According to the ministry, 562 community mediators or “peacemakers” have been appointed to handle social conflicts at the local level to date.
“Although there are challenges to strengthening unity that arises from our diversity, if it is managed well, this will contribute towards the country’s strength in forming a harmonious and united Malaysia,” said the ministry.
The ministry also reaffirmed that Aaron and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Na’im Mokhtar will meet tomorrow with representatives from the Malaysian Consultative Council for Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, and Taoists (MCCBCHST).
The meeting is scheduled to clarify the recent controversy surrounding the placement of religious officers in government departments.
Earlier this week, the MCCBCHST protested against reports that Islamic Development Department (Jakim) officers will be stationed in all government departments to ensure that decisions made are in line with Islamic principles.
However, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has since said there are no new placements involving Jakim officials in government departments.
