Dinner guests cheer as DAP rep announces PN victory

When he announced the Perikatan Nasional victory to the guests, the response was less than encouraging.
“Tonight at a banquet with a few thousand people, I announced the Sungai Bakap by-election results, and the crowd clapped,” Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng posted on his social media accounts.
The posts were accompanied by an emoji representing a frown.
When contacted by Malaysiakini, Lim (above) offered a series of curt responses to a reporter’s questions.
Reporter: What is your response or opinion?
Lim: Self-reflection.
Reporter: What is your comment on the by-election result?
Lim: A valuable lesson from the voters.
He also told Malaysiakini that the banquet was a non-political event, but declined to elaborate.
PN’s Abidin Ismail won the by-election earlier this evening with a majority of 4,267 votes over his Pakatan Harapan opponent Joohari Ariffin.
The margin of Abidin’s victory is greater than that of his predecessor Nor Zamri Latiff during the state election last year.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow attributed Harapan’s defeat, among others, to national issues and waning support from the Chinese electorate.
