Malaysia’s contingent heading to the Paris Olympics later this month will now compete in the world’s fashion capital wearing uniforms with a refreshed design.

This comes as the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) today unveiled its latest jersey design for the games, which replaces the initial version that was widely criticised.

OCM president Mohamad Norza Zakaria said they have chosen a “more striking” tiger stripes design for the team, with the hope that it can fuel their spirit in the City of Love.

In a statement, he said the new jersey features larger yellow stripes on a dark background.

They also brought back the OCM logo - which is made up of the Jalur Gemilang above the five Olympic rings - on the left front pocket position.

“As the official body that manages Malaysia’s contingent to all international games, OCM hopes this more striking design and motif will not only bring out the identity and uniformity of our team, but more importantly, it will symbolise its strength, dexterity, and courage when competing for the country,” he said.

However, Norza added, the new jersey would not display the logo of their sponsor Yonex.

The council received the nod from Yonex Sunrise Malaysia to leave out the logo due to time constraints, he said, as the company requires a formal agreement before a company can print their logo.

“With this decision, OCM hopes that all Malaysians will give their undivided support to the Malaysian contingent to the Paris Olympic 2024 Games, which will be held from July 26 to Aug 11.”

Last week, the OCM agreed to improve the design for the national team’s jersey following pushback against the initial version which was launched during a ceremony at a shopping centre on June 23.

The previous jersey design

Furious internet users quickly criticised the jersey design, which some described as ugly and lacking imagination.

Some even made comparisons to jerseys unveiled by other countries, with some made by renowned fashion designers.
