Perak PAS claims opposition reps barred from honouring teachers

Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria has claimed that opposition assemblypersons were barred from passing cakes to educators to honour the recent Teacher’s Day celebrations.

In a statement, Razman claimed he received complaints from opposition representatives that they were barred from visiting teachers in their respective constituencies on that day, allegedly due to a directive to “respect the government of the day.”

“This is a shameful act in the name of Madani. Teachers are educators of voters’ children in every constituency.

“Therefore, it is an obligation of an elected representative to respect and honour teachers,” he said, adding that previously, no assemblypersons or MPs were stopped from sending cakes to teachers on Teacher’s Day.

He then urged the Education Ministry to explain whether the directive was real and whether it was endorsed by minister Fadhlina Sidek.

Razman further urged the state education director, who allegedly issued the directive as witnessed in a “viral screenshot”, to claim responsibility and issue a public apology to educators.

In a response, Fadhlina said any application for the invitation or visit of VIPs and politicians must be submitted in advance for consideration.

“Unplanned (ad hoc) visits to educational institutions under the ministry are not permitted.”

She said the Guidelines for the Invitation or Visit of VIPs and Politicians to Educational Institutions Under the Ministry of Education Malaysia issued through Circular No 4, 2023, should be referred to.

“These guidelines are important and must be adhered to to ensure the safety, well-being, and welfare of students, teachers, and the entire educational community.”
