Former Sarawak governor Abdul Taib Mahmud has passed away, aged 87.
According to his youngest daughter Hanifah Hajar, Taib breathed his last at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur around 4.40am.
“The last rites will be performed at the National Mosque, before the remains are flown back to Kuching, Sarawak,” the deputy economy minister's private secretary Nurr Shaffique Abdul Karim wrote on her official Facebook.
Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof also confirmed Taib’s passing to Astro Awani, saying that the final rites would be performed at the National Mosque for the Peninsular Malaysia level before the body is flown back home.
Once in Kuching, Taib’s remains will be taken to the state legislative assembly building for final respects, before prayers are done at the Demak mosque, said the report.
The senior politician will then be laid to rest next to his late first wife Laila Taib, at their private residence in Demak Jaya, it added.
Taib served for three terms as Sarawak governor from March 1, 2014, until Jan 26 this year, when Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar succeeded him.
He was also Sarawak’s longest-serving chief minister from 1981 to 2014.
Taib had been receiving treatment at the private hospital since earlier this month.
On Feb 18, his wife Raghad Kurdi Taib denied she had “abducted” him from a specialist hospital in Kuching.
