Takiyuddin decries attack on Ngeh, warns against inflammatory talk

He lauded the police’s swift action and hoped for the arrest of the parties involved.
Takiyuddin (above) also struck a note of caution for those who voice views or take positions that contribute to tension and disharmony, which can provide a spark that starts a bigger fire.
Ngeh had on Dec 28 suggested the inclusion of non-Muslim experts in the special committee to review the jurisdiction of the Syariah Court, although he subsequently withdrew it following a backlash.
“PAS takes seriously and strongly condemns the act of arson against Ngeh at his house early this morning, causing damage to his property.
“PAS welcomes the immediate action taken by the authorities in controlling the situation and conducting a rapid investigation to identify and arrest the parties involved.
“If viewed from any angle, such an act cannot be accepted at all, not only because it is against the law, but also the basic principles of a peaceful and harmonious social life,” said Takiyuddin.
He said PAS believes that differences in views and beliefs do not justify any actions that cross the limits of law and morality, especially those that can threaten lives and the safety of property.
Move to defuse tension
“All efforts must be taken to defuse the tension that may occur due to those differences immediately, fairly and wisely.
“In addition, all parties also need to be more sensitive and careful about voicing any views, positions or suggestions that may contribute to tension and an atmosphere of disharmony in society and may become a spark that starts a bigger fire,” he said.
Takiyuddin added that Ngeh had the sympathy and moral support of all peace-loving Malaysians, as well as protection by the country’s existing laws.
Ngeh today said he forgives the alleged arsonists behind the fire but blamed Perikatan Nasional components PAS and Bersatu for fanning tensions that led to the incident.
Perak police chief Yusri Hassan Basri confirmed that the fire was suspected to be an act of arson and noted that the investigation is being carried out from multiple angles.
There were no casualties in the 2.50am incident, although three cars were razed, including a Mercedes E300. Also partially burnt were a Honda CRV and Toyota Hilux and the house’s porch roof.
