Former PKR treasurer Abdul Rahman Othman has quit the party and applied to join PAS last night.

Contacted today, Abdul Rahman confirmed this but declined to elaborate on the reasons behind his decision.

"I don't have to tell why I quit PKR, what is important is that I am still with the opposition," he said, declining to elaborate.

Abdul Rahman had joined PKR (known as Keadilan prior to its merger with Parti Rakyat Malaysia) since its inception in 1999 following the sacking of former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar is currently the party's adviser and de facto leader.

Ex-PKR Kedah chief quits

In last month's PKR national congress, Abdul Rahman was nominated to contest for the president's post together with Anwar and his wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

However, he pulled out at the eleventh hour when the Registrar of Societies (ROS) barred Anwar from contesting due to his five-year ban from active politics because of his corruption conviction.

This allowed Wan Azizah to retain the post uncontested.

When announcing his decision to withdraw from the contest, Abdul Rahman had hugged Anwar on stage.

In the last general elections, he had contested on a PKR ticket for the Putrajaya parliamentary seat but lost to Tourism Minister Tengku Adnan Mansor.

Prior to the merger between Keadilan and PRM, Abdul Rahman was the deputy president of Keadilan.

Meanwhile, former Kedah PKR chief Akashah Ismail has also quit the party and will join PAS soon.

"I have sent a letter to the party headquarters and Kedah PKR two weeks ago informing them of my decision. PKR is no longer a party for the ordinary people," he said.

Previously, there were complaints that Anwar was allegedly favouring corporate figures over grassroots leaders in the party.
