'Umno could be 'buried' only if it works with PAS'
An Umno leader has slammed a PAS leader's remark that the party could be 'buried' in the 16th general election (GE16) if it does not work with the Islamist party.
According to Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan, Umno could only be rendered irrelevant if it works with PAS, especially in Kelantan, Kedah, and Terengganu.

According to Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan, Umno could only be rendered irrelevant if it works with PAS, especially in Kelantan, Kedah, and Terengganu.
"Let's say we (Umno) work with PAS in Terengganu, how many seats can we get? None. Because they (PAS) hold all the state and parliamentary seats.
"The same will happen if Umno joins hands with Kelantan Umno. How then can Umno expand? In my opinion, Umno will only be 'buried' if it works with PAS," Harian Metro quoted Ahmad telling reporters after attending a function in Pontian, Johor, today.
Ahmad was responding to the claim by PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin earlier today that Umno could be 'buried' in GE16, as the majority of its members and supporters reject the party's cooperation with DAP.
According to Hashim, Umno still has the chance to salvage the situation by working with the Islamist party or Perikatan Nasional in the name of the unity of the ummah.
Elaborating, Ahmad, who is also deputy finance minister, said Umno at least stands a chance of winning state or parliamentary seats in states controlled by PAS, if it does not work with the latter.
"There are chances of us winning because they (PAS) are not doing their job well, the rakyat's wishes are not fulfilled, (so) there are chances of winning seats."
In stressing the impossibility of Umno working with Perikatan Nasional parties, Ahmad, who is also Johor Umno vice chairperson, recalled that PAS has previously pledged to 'replace' Umno, and Bersatu vowed to 'bury' Umno in Johor.
"PKR has never said that it wants to replace Umno," he said, about the party's ally in the coalition government.
