Minister: Haze not expected to persist for long

The haze situation in the country is not expected to persist thanks to shifting wind patterns, said Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
However, he said cloud seeding will be carried out if the Air Pollutant Index (API) picks up readings between 151 to 200 and above for more than 24 hours.
Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat today, Nik Nazmi said the Meteorological Department has prepared a five-day forecast on the transboundary movement of the haze based on the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory and Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service forecast models.
He said the output of the forecasts will be publicly accessible through the Meteorological Department's website.
Nik Nazmi said this while briefing the Dewan Rakyat on the current haze situation.
Besides forecasts on haze movement, he said the Meteorological Department will also be improving its Fire Danger Rating System (FDRS) to give a seven-day forecast on potential fire outbreaks.
He said all Asean countries have voiced support for using FDRS as a means of early prevention against transboundary haze.
