Zahid makes maiden visit at DAP conference

Umno President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has made his inaugural appearance at DAP’s conference today, after decades of rivalry between the two parties.
Zahid’s arrival at the conference held at the Marriot Hotel in Putrajaya was welcomed with enthusiastic cheers and applause from DAP delegates.
The deputy prime minister’s presence at the event was under his capacity as the guest of honour following the establishment of the coalition government under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Accompanying Zahid at the conference were BN secretary-general Zambry Abd Kadir as well as Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
Aside from the BN trio, also present at the event were Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli, PKR vice-president Amirudin Shari, as well as Parti Bangsa Malaysia president Larry Sng.
This is DAP’s first conference since cooperating with other parties and coalitions to form the government in November last year.
DAP had invited all parties and coalitions that are part of Anwar’s administration to its party conference.
However, Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was not present.
On Sept 5, Muda threatened to withdraw support from the coalition government if there was no detailed explanation from the Attorney-General’s Chambers on its decision to withdraw the 47 corruption charges against Zahid.
Yesterday, Syed Saddiq indicated that his party has yet to decide on whether to withdraw support from the government, saying such a decision would be made collectively with fellow party leaders.
Since forming the coalition government together, the tension between political rivals DAP and Umno has loosened.
In May and June respectively, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke also attended the Unity Government Convention and the Umno annual general assembly at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur - which is also Umno’s headquarters.
