Former Kelantan deputy menteri besar Mohd Amar Abdullah has been appointed the new state legislative assembly speaker.

The Panchor assemblyperson was sworn in as the speaker during the assembly sitting at Kota Darulnaim Complex in Kota Bharu this morning.

Newly minted Kelantan Menteri Besar Mohd Nassuruddin Daud nominated Amar (above) and it was seconded by Deputy Menteri Besar Mohd Fadzli Hassan.

With the appointment, Amar officially takes over speaker duties from his predecessor Abdullah Yaakub.

It was understood that he was the sole candidate nominated by the Perikatan Nasional state government through Nassuruddin.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the menteri besar and all assemblypersons who have given their trust for me to lead as the state assembly speaker.

“This appointment is a real honour to me. I vow to do my duties to the best of my ability and hopefully, all state representatives will extend their cooperation to me,” Amar said after taking his oath.

The Kelantan state assembly started its new session today following the recent state election. Kelantan has remained under PAS control after the PN component managed to secure 43 out of 45 state seats in the polls.

Following his appointment, Amar had in turn chosen Mohamed Farid Zawawi (PN-Kok Lanas) as his deputy speaker, replacing Abdul Fattah Mahmood.

The session was then continued with the swearing-in of all Kelantan state assembly members, including two from Pakatan Harapan and BN, Dr Hafidzah Mustakim (Harapan-Kota Lama) and Mohd Syahbuddin Hashim (BN-Galas).

Nik Abduh appointed senator

The assembly sitting also saw former Bachok MP Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz nominated as a Kelantan representative in the Dewan Negara, making him a senator.

Nassuruddin nominated the PAS leader's name and it was seconded by Fadzli, before other members of the assembly unanimously supported the suggestion.

Senator Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz

Nik Abduh will be replacing Mohd Apandi Mohamad whose term as a member of the senate has expired.

The son of former Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat used to be the Pasir Mas MP from 2013 to 2018. Nik Abduh was Bachok MP from 2018 to 2022.

However, PAS had dropped his name from its candidates’ list for the 15th general election in November. Nik Abduh was also not fielded in the recent Kelantan state polls.
