A Selangor state assembly representative today urged the Klang police chief to apologise to Barisan Alternatif for being biased and unprofessional towards opposition supporters.

DAP assemblyman for Bandar Klang Teng Chang Khim alleged that the police had not only intended to oppress the opposition but had tried to frighten their supporters when about 250 police and FRU personnel were present with water cannon trucks at Keadilan's Hari Raya open house at Jalan Kebun, Klang, yesterday.

"The police have behaved in an unprofessional manner and have a tendency to regard all gatherings by BA as illegal assemblies," Teng told malaysiakini today.

"Police here think that all gatherings of BA supporters will end in chaos although the gathering is merely to celebrate Hari Raya Aidil Fitri," he added.

Incidentally, the "100,000 People's Gathering" on Nov 5 last year organised by Keadilan was planned at the same location but the estimated 10,000 participants were stopped along the way by police roadblocks on the adjoining Kesas Highway.

Police dispersed the gathering by firing tear gas and chemical-laced water into the crowd and 125 people were remanded following the event.

The Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) is currently conducting an inquiry into alleged police brutality and have interviewed 27 witnesses to-date.

BN only party

Teng, who is also DAP Youth chief, said that this was not the first time that the police under the direction of Klang District Police Chief, SAC Karn Kam Peng had acted unfairly.

"Many applications for a police permit by BA to hold gatherings in Klang had been rejected without cause while applications by Barisan Nasional had been approved without any fuss," said Teng.

"The police here are also very unfair and biased as they only invite BN representatives to their functions," he added, referring to a Hari Raya reception organised by the police on Jan 13, when only BN party members and state assembly representatives and business people in the Klang district were invited.
