A group of Dayaks whose lands were acquired by the state government for the Kuching international airport runway extension are demanding for their payment as promised.

Speaking to reporters today, the group led by John Suhara claimed that they were promised RM105,000 per acre and a separate compensation scheme for fruit trees in 2004.

"We were informed that the government now has no money to pay us," said Suhara, a 62-year-old pensioner, on their latest visit to the Land and Survey Department.

In Oct 29, 2004 the department served a notice to the affected landowners, informing them of the acquisition of 67 pieces of native titled land in Kampung Stampin and Kampung Sg Tapang.

Suhara later showed reporters copies of letters from the department which had promised that funds would be disbursed once it is received from the 'client department'.

It is estimated that the total quantum allegedly owed by the state government touches RM20 million.

Unconstitutional

Kota Sentosa state assemblyperson Chong Chieng Jen, who organised the press conference, claimed that the rights of the group had been violated according to Article 13 of the Federal Constitution.

"They are furious because their rights have been trampled," said Chong, a lawyer by training.

Chong said the Land and Survey Department appears to be passing the buck to the federal government, although the eviction notices were issued by the state government.

He also showed reporters copies of 2004 news clippings which quotes Second Resource Management and Planning Minister Awang Tengah Ali Hassan assuring that no land would be acquired by the government without compensation being paid.

He said he would bring up the matter tomorrow at the state legislative assembly which resumes sitting on Monday.
