MIC confirms contesting in S'gor, MCA's lot unclear

Selangor MIC has confirmed that it will contest in the upcoming state polls.

Selangor MIC chairperson MB Raja (above), however, said the party has yet to confirm the exact number of seats allocated by BN.

"What was told to us by BN chairperson (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) is that he will inform our (MIC) president there are seats for us, but we're not sure how many," he told reporters after a Selangor BN meeting held at the state Umno headquarters in Shah Alam last night.

Raji said this when asked about Selangor MIC's seat allocation in the upcoming polls.

Commenting further, Raja said the seat allocation will only be finalised by BN component party leaders in a week's time.

It is understood that Selangor MCA chief Ng Chok Sin had attended the state coalition meeting last night but evaded the press after the conference ended close to midnight.

The 14th general election in 2018 saw BN contesting in all 56 state seats - Umno (35), MCA (14), MIC (3) and Gerakan, as a then component, in four seats.

Only Umno won four seats from the figure, while the other component parties were wiped out.

‘We must set our sights to win’

Selangor Umno chief Megat Zulkarnain Omardin said his party welcomes all requests to contest, but the deciding factor remained regarding how far each candidate can win the seat.

"We welcome all requests in BN's spirit. But that doesn't mean there will be no seat, one seat or more (seats). This is subject to discussion.

"We must set our sights to win. So we'll go further from there, and there is no problem with that," he said.

Zulkarnain, however, said the respective parties' presidents will make the final decisions.

"They can ask, but the decisions do not lie with me. The higher leadership will decide this.

"That means the best answer will come from the top leaders," he said.

Previously, Malaysiakini reported that Pakatan Harapan had offered BN to contest 10 seats in Selangor, but this was met by a request for at least an additional seven seats.

Aside from the four Umno-held seats, this news portal understands Harapan has offered BN six more seats won by Perikatan Nasional (PN) through Bersatu and PAS.

The state assembly composition before dissolution saw Harapan with 40 seats (PKR-19, DAP-15, Amanah-six), BN (five), Bersatu (four), and Parti Bangsa Malaysia (two).

At the same time, PAS, Pejuang, and Warisan have one each and one independent representative.
