The Inland Revenue Board (IRB) has raided opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin’s house in Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, according to reports.
When contacted, a source close to the Bersatu leadership confirmed the raid.
“Yes, it was yesterday,” the source told Malaysiakini.
Earlier, The Star and Free Malaysia Today both carried reports quoting sources claiming the IRB has conducted a raid against Hamzah.
However, The Star reported that the raid took place on Tuesday morning, while FMT reported the raid took place last night.
In the report by The Star, the raid was conducted due to “alleged unreported income taxes”.
The English daily quoted a source claiming that Hamzah was at home during the raid and that files, as well as documents pertaining to accounts and asset ownership, were seized.
Sources close to Hamzah were quoted as saying that it was a “politically motivated act by the authorities”, as the Bersatu lawmaker had always recorded his taxes.
“The IRB did not specify in detail the reason for the raid on whether or not it was regarding taxes involving a company or some projects.
“Hamzah is still waiting for documents from IRB,” said the source.
Meanwhile, FMT reported a source from Bersatu who claimed that the raid did not yield anything negative against Hamzah.
