Disclose details of Zakaria probe
Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) has called for a full disclosure of the Anti-Corruption Agency's investigation into the cases involving politician Zakaria Mohd Deros.
Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) has called for a full disclosure of the Anti-Corruption Agency's investigation into the cases involving politician Zakaria Mohd Deros.
Yesterday, Selangor ACA director Mohd Jamidan Abdullah said two of three cases against Zakaria, the Pelabuhan Klang state assemblyperson, has been closed due to lack of evidence.
Selangor ACA submitted three separate investigation papers last month to the Attorney-General Chamber's prosecution division for scrutiny.
"The ACA must assure the public that all efforts were made to get to the bottom of things before such a conclusion (to close the cases) was drawn," said TI-M president Ramon Navaratnam in a statement today.
"Unless the ACA shows more disclosure and transparency in its work, the public will not be encouraged to have sufficient confidence and faith in the ACA," he added.
According to him, the only way to ensure credibility is to have the ACA report directly to Parliament where its annual report could be debated by all MPs, including opposition members.
Istana Zakaria
Zakaria landed in the limelight over a luxurious mansion he built in a low-cost housing estate at Kampung Idaman, Pandamaran, without approval from the Klang Municipal Council.
He said among the reasons for building his 17-room bungalow called 'Istana Zakaria' was his large family comprising 11 children and another 11 grandchildren.
The re-appointment of his son and appointment of his daughter-in-law as councillors in the same municipal council also caused public outrage until receiving attention from the Sultan of Selangor.
Last October, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had advised Zakaria to resign as councillor to put an end to the controversy.
At a tearful press conference later, Zakaria said that he built the mansion to be close to his supporters but kept mum on his position as councillor.
While he did not resign, he was left out of reappointment as councillor.
